This movie, directed by Rob Reiner in 1986, is anything but frightening. The film starts with a narrator telling a story, recalling a past event. It's about that phase of life in which one feels at the end of his childhood, ready to become a young adult.

She knows what her family wants for her, and realizes that it is not who she is, so she pursues a different path.

Stand by Me was different than most coming-of-age stories - for example, it doesn't feature a love interest - and when a script is different, Hollywood usually won't make it. Bruce A. Evans, a producer and co-writer on the film, described why nearly every studio passed on Stand by Me: Every studio in town had turned us down.
